Wait a Minute put a Little...

Trust.
It is hard, it is difficult. However time and time again we see examples of it in scripture. From Adam to the Disciples, they all did one thing to do the crazy, amazing, inspired, God desiring and driven things they did. TRUST.

You see God even before making existence into existence has always known what will exactly happen to well you! This is hard to understand, hard to keep in mind and hard to follow. But in the end is the only thing to do!
TRUST.

Recently I have had to step down from a leadership position that I have been very committed. For a very long time it has been a dream job for me. But yet God has lead me to step down from it. It was probably one of the hardest decisions ever! Then I was reminded of this; God knew this would happen, God knew of the circumstances that led me to step down, He knew that I would, and He knows who will take it up. And so like so many before me I was, am and will always be called to TRUST.

So in this day remember one thing; God knows, He will always know and you can take not only comfort in that, not only refuge in that, but that you MUST follow that and always keep that in mind. It is hard, it is difficult, sometimes we don't always understand it, and forget it. But sometimes we need to : wait a minute, and put a little TRUST in it!

Porn, Christ, and You

Hey, so this week I had to write a paper for my psych class, hope you enjoy:

In the following paper, one will see the psychological and emotional effects of pornography on young adult males. Through the analysis of articles written in the study of this subject, facts and evidence will be given to prove the findings of this research.
As one looks into this issue, they must first understand who, and how many participate in the action of observing pornographic material; studies have shown that 87% of young adult males have used pornography to some degree, and for woman, 31%. Of that 87% of young men, 67% see nothing wrong with this behavior, thinking it is acceptable and it has no ramifications. Also making this claim is 49% of women, along with 37% of fathers, and 20% of mothers (Nelson, 2010). However, research has been done to see for certain if interaction with pornography does cause any negative, or dangerous effects to ones emotional, and psychological being.
Over the years studies have shown, opposite of some certain beliefs, that usage of pornography can bring on emotional and psychological problems. Excessive use of pornography can cause; vocational issues, family dysfunction, legal consequences, interpersonal isolation and psychological distress (Grubbs, 2015). Other studies have shown similar results such as; sexual dysfunction, relationship dissatisfaction, religious and spiritual concerns, increased negative emotions, aggressive behavior, and sexual deviancy (Levin, 2012). This evidence clearly shows that although the 67%, 49%, 37% and 20% of men, woman, fathers and mothers believe that it is appropriate and helpful, that is clearly can be damaging to an individual.
Most of this research found however, that these results are mainly due to an addictive behavior, seen in participation beyond 11 hours a week. When the behavior excels beyond just casual usage, to excessive use is likely to end in some damaging effects. In a survey done of 9,265 people, it showed that 8% of  those who partook in pornographic material for more then 11 hours per week, (Grubb, 2015), had experienced a negative response emotionally or psychologically. Even those who where not considered to have an addictive behavior, reported it as problematic to thier overall emotions and psychological behavior. However, those who had a higher sexual compulsivity as well as engaging in pornography as an addiction, showed that only 18% and 28% had no interference or life threatening issues due to their addictive behavior (Levin, 2012). Therefore one can simply conclude that it is not just due to an addiction, but if one feels it is causing difficulties interpersonally, vocationally, or personally.
This addictive behavior towards pornographic material is associated with the act of ‘experiential avoidance’. Experiential avoidance is a result of a compulsive response and behavior, it comes into play when one is trying to avoid or reduce difficult emotions. It can be done through many forms, such as the use of drugs, hair pulling, or participating in self-harm. Many have studied this and in the studies associated with pornography usage have argued that it is a result of experiential avoidance.
The issue here is, that by partaking in this response more psychological problems may occur. In a study done by Abramowitz, Tolin and Street in 2001 it was found that experiential avoidance many times increases the regularity and depth of the emotion or experience that is trying to be avoided! This causes amplification of the avoidance and in doing so limits and narrows one’s life (Levin, 2012). In light of this with a connection to frequent pornography use, which is mainly used to avoid stress, only in the end causes more.
In a study done by Levin and his associates in 2012, his findings were that addictive behavior with pornography is highly connected with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, stress, and poorer social functioning behaviors. Joshua Grubbs and his associates did a similar study in which they found a connection with psychological distress and mental health, which is supported by research done previously with hyper sexuality. These two studies have done a very throe and precise analysis of the issues surrounding pornographic material in young men.
As one approaches this topic from a Christian perspective they must be careful. In a world that is so indorsing and accepting with a topic such as pornography one must come to this with respect, lenience, and guidance. The material used for this paper was extremely enlightening not only to one from a Christian worldview but also in general.
For many males this is clearly an issue and struggle, and for Christian males especially it is a huge temptation. However the evidence provided from the source material brings clarity to what God had already placed in scripture. As addressed in the articles, the issues and problems produced with experiential avoidance are so clear. Many approach pornography as a copping mechanism for hard emotions, or stress. However, as addressed before, this action can actually bring about more pain emotionally and psychologically. This is echoed in scripture with passages such as; 1 Corinthians 6:18, 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 and Matthew 5:28. These verses echo that God knows the harmful result that things like pornography can and will cause.
It not only shows this but it reveals that from the beginning God knew the harm humankind could, would and is inflicting on themselves. God’s grace is reflective through this. The fact that every word penned in scripture was done so for a specific reason; that being a desire for the Lord God and in a result a casting away and shedding of a worldly sinful life.
Through the analysis in this paper one can clearly see the harmful results pornography has on an individual’s emotions and psychological behaviors. From a Christian standpoint and evaluation, it is seen that this evidence is a reflection of what scripture has already stated. God’s grace is revealed through His words and actions. Specifically to this subject, He has set in place a motion so that the harmful acts of sexual sin would be obverted. This paper has presented the facts of how and showed why pornographic material is harmful to the human individual.

The False Platform 9 3/4

For most of us, if not all, there is a wall in our lives. This wall has always been there, over course for many of us it takes a while to realise it is there. Once we realise that this wall is a part of our life, or rather a barrier that remains in our life, we begin to run into it. In this we have the hope that some how the wall will fall down, we will be able to brake through it, or in some cases we hope it is like platform 9 3/4 in Harry Potter and we will be able to run through it.
However, after many attempts at running through this wall, I find that we begin to grow tired, we conclude that this wall will most likely never cease its existence in our lives. In this mind set we sit down, many of which I believe have their arms crossed and their lips pursed in anger.
But here's the thing, about a week ago I found myself once again in front of this wall. For the first time I did not want to a) run into the wall hoping to come out on the other side, or b) sit down and accept the fact that it is never going to leave and I will just let it continue to block my life. In short, I had begun to become tired of being tired of this wall.
As I stood there, facing this wall, neither running into it fists flying, nor sitting in front of it arms crossed, I began to hear one single word... TRUST. For the following days all I heard while I went about life, mentally standing in front of this wall was TRUST.
Trust is an interesting thing. In reality it is a simple little word, many a time I find myself pronouncing a word in my head and thinking how silly it is that we put sounds and the shaping of out mouth to ideas and concepts. But that is beside the point.
Trust is something that can be earned, lost, or given freely. It can strengthen people, build people, brake people, and cause them to curl up and never open up again. But yet it is sometimes, with some people, in certain places, situations and circumstances, the easiest thing to do.
Trust is a common thing for many of us in faith. It is if not one of the most important aspect of following Christ. Without trust in God and His guidance following Him is useless. And yet Trusting God is the hardest thing we Christians struggle with. Yes I am sure there are many things Christians struggle with, but in reality are these not the effects or outcomes of not trust God? Does it not begin with trusting Him?
We want to be in control, we want to hold the steering wheels, we want to shift the gears, and most of all we want to control the gas pedal to maintain a speed of our choosing. The fact is we are unable to be in control. We are like little kids without their license, we love the idea of driving, we dream about it and one day hope to ourselves. But the moments we do get behind the wheel we don't know what to do, we either freeze up or press the gas to fast and run into a tree or something. But God is experienced, He has been "driving" with people for years, more then we ever could! It takes courage, don't get me wrong, and a lot of push to let Him in and drive, but it all starts with trust.
Now you might want to yell at me and hit me by this point and scream "IT'S NOT THAT EASY NATHAN!" and my reply would basically be "I agree!" Why? Well coinciding I am a human just like you are, I completely understand, I struggle to! Wow crazy right!
Letting Him guide is the most important thing in our relationship and walk with Him, but it is also the hardest thing. Do I have a quick solution to putting your trust in Him? Nope! I am simply saying that you and I have one thing in common, we are both lost, we both have no clue where to go or what to do. And we both have this annoying wall in front of us! So whatever point your at, whether your running into the wall hoping to get through it, whether your sitting in front of it, or standing in surrender to letting Him take control and guide you. Just know that you and I are in the same place, that we are the same in that sense, and in reality that we are just like every other person on this planet.
So I have one last thing to say, Trust Him, whatever that means. Whether it means taking 5 minutes or 5 hours out of your day to spend time with Him, talk to Him, let Him in, get to know how He works with you! But never ever just sit there, or try yourself to get through this because it wont work... trust me, it wont.
Where has your wall brought you?

Stephen Fry and the "HOW DARE US"

As I skimmed through my Facebook wall this article/video came up. I took the 2:25 to watch it... and when I finished I felt like crying. To be honest my first reaction was anger... now hear me out on why. Was I angry at Stephen Fry himself? NOT AT ALL! I have no right to be angry at Stephen Fry, that is not my place. But rather I was angry at the person/pastor/child of God, who so miss lead Stephen into thinking that God brought the horrible result of sin into this world.
God created a world of love and creation that was proclaimed "GOOD"... He created man in His image as the rulers of this earth to bring His glory to all. Did He create and proclaim ANYTHING "bad, evil, cruel, selfish" if He did show me the scripture, because it doesn't in the Bible I have been reading. HOWEVER it does say this:That man and woman put themselves before God, and as a result committed the first sin, wanting to RULER LIKE GOD, and NOT FOR GOD. So was it God who brought the result of pain, selfish desire, evil, and an unjust nature into this world? or rather was it a result of the idolatry of Adam and Eve?
And so in response to Stephen Fry saying "How dare you God" I would say to him rather "How dare us!" I am filled with sadness that Stephen and so many others are miss led by the lie that God is a cruel, revengeful, self seeking, man in the sky who is out there to get you.
When looking in scripture I see a God who cares, loves, seeks and puts His people and children first.

Surrender and Sacrifice upon the Alter

"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
-James 4:7

It's all about me right? well if your reading this, it's not about me, but rather about you, right? You are your own individual, therefore you make your own choices, decisions, life changing moments, where you go, who you live with (depending), what you want to be. Or do you really?
Looking back on this year (summer 2013-summer 2014) God has really worked on surrender and sacrifice. Although more emphasized this month then most, overall that's what this year has been about. Surrender and sacrifice of ones life to God is probably the hardest, yet most rewarding thing of life.
To give up all is to be given the gift that never stops. Giving up your life, your choices, your decisions, your future to Christ will not be easy.... it took me 5 years. But the moment He takes the control, the wheel, the rudder, He steers you through the rough water to freedom. He calms the storm.
Many have said the Peace in Christ is that He does not take the suffering and pain of life away, but rather holds our hand through it and walks with us through it. Through the valley He is along side of us (Ps.23).
God must be the center to have true peace, not a part to have partial satisfaction.

The Joy of Lost Rememberance

Sitting here it's interesting, watching people walk by not even knowing what was done 1000 years ago on these five following days. I was listening to a sermon this morning, the Pastor was preaching from Judges and the passage said that all the generations that were alive during the freedom of Egypt had past away. The new generation had no clue about God and what He had done for them. The Pastor said "Sounds a little bit like today, doesn't it?"
I am shocked how many people I have run into that have no clue who the Jesus is, what the Bible is and think that Christians simply believe is some dude with a long white beard sitting in the clouds! Yet it means so much more. Easter should not be a once a year celebration, but be an acceleration of excitement throughout the year... however do to the lack of education about it, even within churches, it is simply just another holiday you get chocolate one and sometimes presents.
My dad has been doing a sermon series this month that is not the common series. For example, last week we did not spend Sunday celebrating palm Sunday, now we did not forget it and say it is "irrelevant and applicable in today's modern culture and society", that is not the reason at all! Rather we celebrated and remembered Palm Sunday about three weeks ago. My dad has seen the importance Easter is, and how we should put more attention and give it more credit then is has had in the past. My dad, as well as I have seen that along with our culture, Christians have put more attention and excitement into Christmas then Easter.
Now don't get me wrong, Christmas is important, seeing as it is the coming of Christ, however, it is the prologue to the story of Christs death. His resurrection is the last page, and his ascension is the epilogue. You see we have lost our excitement for THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENT OF THE YEAR!
Live in freedom knowing that you are free of the burdens of life. Live in respect knowing what He did for you. Live in constant remembrance of the joy He has given.

Shaking the Chains

It weighs you down like nothing else. Day after day you can feel it beating down. Driving your face into the dirt, muffling your breath against the ground. Until you can't take it anymore, until it gets to be so much your stuck.
I will admit this was me... stuck in a world were every day was a challenge, a fight to be lost. Getting up and being punched back down in the ring. These last 3 days I could feel all the pressure from it, all jam packed, like cloths in a not big enough suitcase. It drove me to the ground, flinging me against it. I came to a point were I couldn't go on. A slave to my own demons, I had served them night and day... sometimes being released from there grasp for a time, but never from their sight. This was my life... wanting to be free of the chains, but holding onto them because they were the only thing I knew.
Last night was a night like no other, hard, rough... the shadows had consumed me I will admit. I had lost my way, straying from the light that warmed my face, to the cold dark pit I had let them dig and through me into. Who was I? Where was I? What was I? They began to mock me, laugh in my face... and I lay there, defeated, believing the lies and words they hurled at me. To them I was a rag doll to be thrown around.
This morning I woke, eyes opened to the new world that was tomorrow, but something was different. A voice began to speak to me... "No more" it repeated over and over again... "No more"... I heard the running of those demands feet... I had heard their approach many a time, every night they came to me, every morning they awoke me with their laughter... but this sound made by them was different, this sound was one that faded into the distance... the sound of running away... like the cowards they truly were.
The voice began to become louder... "NO MORE!"... like a fog horn guiding a lost ship to shore, it called me to the light again... I felt it's warm rays hit my face like fire, its hot air flow through my body, giving my lungs the oxygen they needed to produce blood.
I looked around me and something was different, my hands no longer gripped the chains... but rather were around something different, something softer, something warmer... something much much much more greater.

Although this might sound like a story... it is not, it is the only way I can describe to you what happened to me this week. This week I felt the presence of something not of this world, something I fully believe to be a spiritual war fighting for me... You might read those words and think "great, another religious nut.." But, that's not what I am... bet you have heard that before ;)... but just hear me out, please continue reading, because what I have to say is very important.
Ever since I was a Christian I believed that God could fill people with His spirit, we read that in Acts chapter 2... if you don't believe me, pick up your, or a Bible and turn to it and read it yourself. But that is not what I am trying to prove here, so I will continue. So I always believed, ever since He approached me that one Thursday at Camp Cherith on the CILT town benches, that He could fill people with His spirit, instill in them a fire that never goes out. This I believe because every true Christ One has it, however sometimes this fire dies down, it is still there, but God continues to feed it... we just need to let Him.
Now for me, this fire was dieing slowly... letting as I will put it for now "my Demons" take my mind of letting Him feed it. This happened over a span of 8 years... two years after opening myself to these demons I realised what I had done, for the next 6 years I would try and try and pray and pray to be free of them... but for the next 6 years I would continue to fall under there rule.
This Summer however God revealed something to me, He told me "Nathan, this year will be one of the hardest, but greatest years for your life, spiritually and socially!" I heard Him say this, and went into this year not knowing what He was going to do.
Since the beginning of September He has shaken the very foundations of my beliefs, thoughts, and faith... if you want proof read all my other posts, they will show you my thoughts throughout these past 6-7 months.
But today was by far the most shaking... He showed this to me...
That He is instilling a spirit of freedom and revelation in the generation that walks the earth now, that He will fill the hearts of all and we under the name and through the power of Christ will shake the world.
I am tired of seeing and partaking in the running to our demons that keep a hold on us.. and so starting today I will seek Christ ONLY! I will pray that He and He alone will be my desire, as well for you!
So know that you, I don't know who you are, but you who reads this, are not alone, I am here for you, I am praying for you!
HE CAN, HAS, WILL, AND IS FREEING/FREED YOU! THAT IS THE WHAT THE CROSS IS, WAS, AND WILL FOREVER BE! A SYMBOL OF OUR FREEDOM FROM THE CHAINS OF SIN!

in prayerful love,
-Nathan

The Ripped Curtain

Sometimes we just find our self in a pit... in that deep dark hole we all know so well by this time. It's a frequent place, it seems like it was built just for us, a prison with the bars of black despair. We fall into it what seems like daily, we feel lost, forgotten, ugly, and unwanted.
I'll admit it is a frequent place for me as well... and most times it seems like I have just left for to go to the visiting room and return after only a short time. But I realised something about that place... I saw it from a different light, I cocked my head and saw it from all the other angles, and those concrete walls and black metal bars faded away, and were replaced by a thin little curtain.. a veil... riddled with holes, tattered and ripped straight down the middle.

"At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split" -Matthew 27:51

God opened my eyes... that that "wall" between us and Him, isn't a wall at all, its a little thin, old, tattered curtain that was ripped by Christ 100s of years ago! That every time I am thrown into that cell of sorrow, and self pity, and sin... I can get up and walk out, and follow Him away from it and never return!

"Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. "Quick, get up!" he said, and the chains fell off Peter's wrists." - Acts 12:7

The minute we spoke for His spirit to intercede and help us, with all our heart, our chains fell off. The weight is lifted, because we are given the realisation that we have been reborn. Satan scared us and defines us with the past, God shows us the truth of who we are and to become! Our past self that Satan reminds us of is dead, and we are reborn in Christ, through the cross!

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
- 2 Corinthians 5:17

That barrier between you and God is nothing, it has already been taken away, that hole isn't as deep as you thought it was, those bars are rusting steel, brittle and weak! You are made new in Him and nothing can come in between you and Him. Life will be hard, don't get me wrong, troubles and storms will come! God is is not a magic genie, the cross is not the bottle you rub for your 3 wishes, rather he is the friend who walks with you, in understanding!

"But that's not all. We also brag when we are suffering. We know that suffering creates endurance, endurance creates character, and character creates confidence" - Romans 5:3-4

"For I am certain that nothing can separate us from his love: neither death nor life, neither angels nor other heavenly rulers or powers, neither the present nor the future, neither the world above nor the world below—there is nothing in all creation that will ever be able to separate us from the love of God which is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 8:38-39

A Lion with No Teeth....

You are not alone. You may be reading this and thinking you are alone, but you are not a lone. We all have that one thing, that one specific dark shadow in our life that lingers over us. In public we put a mask over it, so people will never see who we really are underneath. It makes us feel alone.
When I started opening up, I realized I was not alone, that my dark shadow was a common thing. Yes it was a unique struggle to me, but it was for millions of other guys out there as well.
I don't know what you struggle with, I don't know how big your dark shadow is, but I know one thing. Satan makes it feel like you are weird, disgusting, that you are different (not in a good way), that who could ever understand. I listened and believed this lie for many years... 7-8 years I have struggled with my shadow, it has lingered, and become something of a comfort to me, when I am scared I run to it. Why? b/c I am used to it, it has become a norm for me, I hate that dark shadow that looks big.... but that is all it is, a shadow, the thing that casts it is the smallest thing ever... b/c I am not alone.
I realized a while ago that God is much bigger. That He came and took that shadow away, shinning the light of truth upon the thing that made it... compared to Him, it was nothing. But He had used this shadow to do something, to show me that I am not alone, to give me the ability to make this post, to give me the knowledge to share with others that they are not alone in this! THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
So weather your shadow is porn, abuse, in and out of relationships, drinking, drugs, cutting, or even eating, whatever it is, whatever that dark shadow that looks so big, YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Know that I am praying for all of you, maybe not by name, but I know you are out there, and YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!

"Be alert, be on watch! Your enemy, the Devil, roams around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour." - 1 Peter 5:8 (LIKE, but he has no teeth)

"Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest." - Matthew 11:28

Out of the brain and into the eyes of a stranger

Sometimes others challenge you to see things differently, to gain almost a better understanding of life itself. We can get so caught up in our own ways, our own type of thought process that we basically can't even see past our own nose in a way.
One day I was on the phone with a friend, we had not talked in a long time, in a way our friendship had been put on pause, this bothered both of us and so we had both decided to push the "play button" again. We talked about a lot of stuff that had been going on. This consisted of many topics, but one thing really stuck with me; seeing things from their perspective, seeing their side of the stories, experiences and thoughts.
It's interesting once we open up our minds and let someone else's eyes in there! Try it step back, see it from there side, from there views, thoughts, actions and expressions. I promise, you will start to, as Obi One once said "Go home and rethink your life" ;)

God bless,
-Nathan

My Friend Katrina

The first time I ever saw her we were all in a circle, she stood to my right, straight cut bangs hung just above her eyes, and her hair was long and a little frizzy. My first thoughts were nothing but a lie, "She looks like a geek." However three weeks from the day I would know that she was nothing like my first "thoughts", she would soon become a sister, and a best friend to me for the rest of my known life.
Her name was Katrina (not actually but for privacy purposes I am not writing her actual name), at first glance she was just any other girl, but I quickly learned that she was 5'5ft and was a tank. I remember playing against her in a game of tackle duck duck goose, she would like to think she won, however I know that I actually won the game! (this has been an on going argument for the last 5yrs). But back to the story, so we were playing this and Katrina and I went at it for what seemed like 20minutes straight, hair was pulled, punches were throne, kicks were...well kicked! By the end of it we were both covered in dirt and grass stains, and I had gained a greater respect for Katrina.
On the other hand, Katrina was the most caring, most helpful, and most positive person I had ever had the honor of knowing. For two months straight, as she life guarded our pool at the summer camp were we both met and worked she would ask me to come stand with her for 2hrs. In these 2hrs we would discuss things such as; theology, thoughts on God, faith, life, friends, family, what was going on, food, jokes, etc... Those times were and are probably some of the fondest memories I will ever have.
After 4 years of knowing Katrina, we had become more then friends, we had become siblings. She saw me as a brother, and I saw her as my sister. She was the first to know many things that went on in my life, my thoughts on life, and other topics.
But, (there is always a but), in March of 2013 she was diagnosed with depression. I remember her telling me this, holding up the anti-depressants. My heart broke for her, but I was reminded that I was there to support her. I continued to keep her in my prayers, she fell deeper and deeper into the hole depression can be. The deeper she fell, the more I prayed.
As this past fall came on she had grown very apart from all of her friends, including me. In all fairness I don't hold it against her! I know she will be reading this, seeing as she told me that she was very excited to see what I had to say when I told her I was going to post about her and I's friendship. So Katrina, I never once judged you for drawing away, I prayed for you everyday.
This past year was a very difficult time at the beginning between me and her. She had started to what seemed to be a "re-defining" of herself, however I would later learn this was not what it was at all. The things I saw without fully discussing them with her scared me, I began to worry. We began to see things differently, and deep down I had lost some respect for her.
However, this past month was an eye opener for me, and I believe for her as well. Out of know where God asked me to message her, to go to the extent of seeing if she wanted to legit talk about what had been going on. She suggested a phone chat (I know right, times have changed when phoning is the "if I must" type of thing). We talked for 2 1/2hrs straight. At first I will admit, it was a little bumpy, getting past the "How are yous" and "I am fines" and all that type of small talk. But after I hung up my phone I had gained a better understanding of her, and her perspective on many of the topics we did not see eye to eye on.
I will admit, we both do not see eye to eye on somethings, however we are closer to seeing on the same level then we once did. So even though this is true she will always be my best friend sister, I will always hold the times I spent walking, sitting, standing in the middle of the pool field, filling up garbage bagged boxes with water, and giving each other blind piggy back rides close to my heart and as some of the best, most favoured and cherished memories of my life and my time spent with my friend Katrina.
In prayerful support,  your brother, and friend,

Brazil, from questions to reality

August 2012, I stood in the middle of the field at the summer camp I work at, filling cardboard boxes with garbage bags full of water. I had a red cape on my shoulders and was talking with my friend, we were talking about missions trips, she the previous year had gone to Argentina, I being born into a very missions focused family had always wanted to go on one. When suddenly I had the urge to go on one that year. It came out of no were, but God said "Nathan I want you to go on a missions trip." Did I know where, when, or even how? Not a clue.
That following year I started it off with this thought constantly running through my head. "I want you to go on a missions trip." I remember countless walks to school asking Him out loud "WHERE! WHEN! HOW!" November rolled around, the first weekend of which is my churches annual missions conference. And again that voice called to me, and again I cried out.
After that weekend my dad was approached by an elder from the church, he had been looking at going on a missions trip with CBM (Canadian Baptist Ministries). He asked if my dad thought anyone would be interested in going on a trip with him, funny that this was the same time God was calling me to go on one eh? And funny that out of no where my dad asked me if I was interested. The moment he told me I heard that voice again "YES!"
Almost a year from when He called me to go, I found myself in the back of a VW car, next to a guy who I had met only hours before. I looked around, red dirt filling the air, sun beaming down, and feeling like junk after a total of  10hrs in the air. God had brought me to Brazil. And He used it to change and work in me.
The next 2 weeks were ones that I will never forget. I can not tell you everything. Well I guess I could but you would be reading a book not a blog at that point. But I'd just like to share a couple of my experiences with you and my thoughts about what happened and where God had lead me.
The first night in Brazil was my most treasured and favourite memory of life and will probably stay in that position for a very long time. 6 hours after arriving in the little town of Augus Lingas, we went to our very first Brazilian church service. A small rectangular building, with a massive mural painted at the front and red stained lawn chairs, but looking past that I saw something beautiful, something I will never ever forget. About fifty people fit in there, ages 3-70 but no matter the age all had faced pointed up, hands held high, and voices crying out as loud as they could to the Lord. I had no clue what they were saying, but I did know one thing, that they were worshipping Him. I will never forget looking around and thinking "wow, this is what it means to have brothers and sisters around the world, this is what it means to have a spiritual connection, I have no clue what they are saying God, but I know it is for you!"That night opened my eyes to how incredible this trip was going to be.
For two weeks I was going to live, interact, work with, and spend time with 6 other people, 4 of which I had never met before. However as time went on, I began to love these people, I would joke with them, laugh with them, eat with them, pray with them, and grow with them. It made me realise, that I not only had grown to love these 6 people but everyone we interacted with. I had met so many people, 90% of which could not understand a word I said, and I could not understand a word they said. But they smiled and enjoyed our company. I remember the last day we spent in Brazil, Joyce, the missionary we lived with told us that the people here had enjoyed us so much. That they initially loved us, and were so thankful we had come.
Looking back on those two weeks, I learned so much, God worked through Georgie, a man who could not speak a word of English, but yet spent so much time with us and was our friend. He worked through the kids we played with in the dirt field throwing a beat up Frisbee and making bracelets out of beads, He worked through the woman who cooked us lunches, He worked through everything. And now as almost a year and a half has passed since that sunny day when I first heard His call, I thank Him for the amazing journey and growth He took me on.
I may never see any of those people ever again, until one day in heaven, but I still love them for who they are, I love them for they are my brothers, sisters, friends, and family.

Being a guy who has struggled in this world for many years I appreciate Anna's sincerity, honest, and truth. I know first hand how hard it is to keep on facing ahead. The issues of an addiction to lust is not being addressed nearly as much as it should be. It is one that is real, that Anna clearly shows here in her blog post.
So I doubt Anna will ever see this, I doubt she will ever read this, but thank-you so much for this, believe me when I say that you have helped me in saying this! May God continue to bless you Anna, and may He continue to use you to encourage all those around you.
God bless,
Your brother in Christ

A Study on the Biblical Church, Part 3: What is Accountability

Accountability:
Responsibility for own acts

-Galatians 6:1-5
-If it is needed, help others who are struggling
-do so with maturity, grace, patience, kindness, and gentleness
-make sure with in this you do not fall into the pit they are also in
-remember always that you are no better then them, but rather their equal
-you have struggles and testing as well, it is no greater or less then theirs
-focus on how He is using you, not comparing yourself to others in Him
-Different lives, different paths, but initially the same journey!
-1 Thessalonians 5:11
    -"so encourage one another"
-Paul also speaks of encouragement in Philippians
-Encouragement is key in the faith
-we can get dragged under the waves of discouragement
-however, if we focus on lifting each other up, unlike the world which says to push others down, we will create a people that no one                     can push down!
-Proverbs 27:17
-We are the only ones who are going to look out for each other
-He uses His spirit to work through us
-like Sharpening a knife, accountability is done delicately, skillfully and done with a huge amount of respect
-Romans 14:12
-We, in the end will all have to stand before God
-the previous verses show that He has placed others to help us, that He uses to guide us
-if we have ignored Him speaking through His spirit, using others, then we will stand with a heavy head
Refection:
Accountability, it is something that we can all see is lacking in the Modern Church. Through these verses you can see that it is something, however, unlike the world says, of caring, trusting, and building up, not judgement, and hypocrisy. This should be done very carefully and respectfully, as Proverbs 27:17 gives us the image of sharpening, one can not help but think of sharpening a knife, which is done this way, in respect and carefully. Accountability focuses on encouragement, it is primarily an action saying, "I know you are better then this, I want you to achieve." It is not an action of bringing one down, but about building up.

A Study of the Biblical Church, Study 2: What is Fellowship?

Fellowship:
A close relationship or unity

-1 John 1:7
-explains that fellowship is found in the blood of Christ
-it is the thing that brings us together
-all differences are put aside, b/c this is the only thing that matters in the end
-1 Corinthians 1:9
-this is an example of fellowship with Christ
        -God grants it to us
-Philippians 2:1
-Fellowship granted by the Holy Spirit

Reflection:
Fellowship is primarily with that of Christ, the Father and The Holy Spirit, so God in Summary. It is a unique and special connection with Him, it is experienced with other believers, but only if He is the centre of it all. This means that even when by ones self, fellowship can be experienced, but it is not a fellowship found in a physical worldly context, but a fellowship on a spiritual level that is with our LORD.

A Study of the Biblical Church Part 1: What is Church?

Church:
Assembly

The Body and People
-1 Corinthians 12:18-20
-like a body the church has many parts, not just one part
-with many parts there are many differences
            -22-26
-these differences may seem like weakness' in some eyes
-in reality these are what strengthens the church body
-Biblical, they should take this under their care and so they grow and strengthen each other
-Ephesians 1:23
-The church without Christ is nothing
-The church needs to be broken
-He completes and fills it, without him it is empty
-1 Timothy 3:15
-the church is referred to as "the household of God"
-Acts 2:42-46
    - The church is a place where; "believers met together in on place and shared everything they had"
        - this could be seen in a physical context, or also in a mental context
-implying that the church was welcoming to all, that there was no restraint or hesitant with sharing issues and problems
-also note that they gathered in worship, and in giving

Reflection:
Church is the gathering of an imperfect people under one banner, the banner of Christ. It is interesting to see that even with this, the church is still considered "the household of God." And like it says 1 Corinthians 12:18-20, our weakness is our strengthening. If there is weakness in the church, rather then ignoring or dismissing it, we in a biblical manner should build up and strengthen the individual(s), thus making the whole body of the church stronger. However, if Christ is not the centre of this the actions and meeting of the church is useless and means nothing, the focus must be in, through and on Christ. The Church is simply an assembly or gathering of a group of imperfect individuals. Many see this as a weakness, but the Bible says if you stay focused and keep Him as your centre you will only grow stronger.

Summing it all up: Chapter 4, a Study on Philippians

Chapter 4
4:1
-Paul opens up in spiritual encouragement
4:2
-Paul advices to put petty world differences aside and seek Him
4:3
-when supporting and guiding other believers remember to be gentle and that they are fellow brothers and sisters
4:4-5
-Paul says keep Him at the centre of everything
-this makes it that He is the only thing you seek
-He will come back some day and all he asks is that you be ready for it
4:6-7
-Paul tells the church in Philipi bot not worry
-rather lift it up to Him
-once you do this fully and with full faith you will have no concern, and a sense of wholeness will be there
4:8-9
-Fill your mind with pure things
-replace all that is sinful and worldly with Godly and Holy things
-if this is done fully and full of faith, God will provide
-things will start to come together and make sense

Reflection on 4:1-9
Paul, like everything in this book, opens with encouragement, showing that every encounter, weather good or bad, should be opened with encouragement and support. He then continues to show spiritual concern and guidance, touching on issues such as being in fellowship with each other not fighting, keeping Christ as the centre. The last two sections are those filled with prayer, advising to lift your worries up to God and then keep a self restraint on the mind, giving it over to Him so He may show you the way.

4:10-14
-Paul again opens with encouragement
-He then says that he has found true happiness
-one that is not filled with worldly desires, but with a Godly heart
-one that will never suffice outside of Christ
4:15-18
-The church in Philipi shows there true nature
-Paul says they are a church of a giving spirit
-that when he needed help the most, even when he didn't ask for it, they gave it to him
-this shows that when one is found in Christ all they want to do is give, not get
4:18-20
-There spirit of giving is shown even more
4:21-22
-Paul encourages them to welcome and share with all there brothers and sisters in the faith
-the church in Philipi is shown here to be a true church of God
4:23
-ending with encouragement

Philippians 1-4 Reflection:
Like said at the beginning this book can be summed up in one word; Encouragement. Paul continuously encourages the church in Philipi, giving them encouragement in all areas, in prayer, faith and life. He lends his advice in areas dealing with people who are only in the faith to see how much they can get out of it, with this ye says to welcome them and show them through a life style what it truly means to be a Christian. Showing that even in jail he has a mission field, Paul shows that the church is not the only place of spiritual growth, but anywhere there is a follower of Christ. Telling the people in Philipi, he shows that being reminded of certain things is not bad, for he continues to warn and advice them. Chapter 4 then is a summing up of everything, continuing to encourage and pray for the church in Philipi.

Application:
Encourage your fellow brothers and sisters, support, advice, pray for them, we are all on different laps of the race, but in the end we run through the same finish line. If some fall, help them up with His encouragement, if others are having trouble support them and pray for them through His spirit. Encourage!

A Constant Reminder: Chapter 3, a study on Philippians

Chapter 3

3:1
-Although this is one verse it speaks to who Paul is
-He tells that he will repeat what he has said before
-however spiritual reminders are sometimes the best things in life
3:2-6
-Paul warns of those who are "religious busy bodies"
-he says they have no true faith and are only about making themselves look good
-he then says that the church in Philipi is not this
            -there faith is genuine
-He says he has every right to say this b/c he once was this
-someone who "meticulously observed God's word"
-looking at the law, rather then the message and love
3:7-9
-Paul says that these people show off who they are with there schooling and wise insight
-he says this is useless before Christ
-Christ will use whoever he likes, however he likes
-these things used to be important to Paul but once he say the true Christ his eyes were opened
-he puts it this way "I didn't want to petty, inferior, brand of righteousness that comes from keeping a list of rules when I could get the                 robust kind that comes from trusting Christ"
3:10-11
-Paul says he puts all worldly things behind him
-this gives him a better understanding of Christ
-putting all aside and just focusing on Him

Refection on 3:1-11
This segment is almost a little summery of what was already said in chapters 1&2. Paul address' this from the beginning, saying I will repeat myself, however this is needed, spiritual reminders are most of the time the best things ever. He warns of those who are only in for themselves, and speaks against these people, that in reality they are missing out on a true faith with God, which would fully satisfy. By example Paul finishes off with saying that worldly thing are useless and once one realises this their whole perspective on life changes, focusing only on Christ.

3:12-14
-Paul says he is not perfect, he admits this
-he says that he doesn't have the all the answers, but He knows Christ is the one answer to all
-He says he will never let go of this
3:15-16
-If you are seeking something else in Christ, for your own selfish gain, Christ will wipe that away
-what once started off as a selfish thing, God transformed into a real relationship with Him
-He hen continues to say that if you have discovered this then you should hold onto this and continue to seek Him
3:17-19
-Paul says that believers should seek Christ through his example
    -that they should seek Christ
-he warns of those who say this but are simply trying to take all they can get
-Paul genuinely cares, these others will not
3:20-21
-with an excitement like no other Paul speaks of what will happen to those who truly seek Christ
-he says that this is not the end, but just the beginning
        -Christ is all

Chapter 3 refection:
In this chapter Paul opens up with a reminder, and then he continues to talk of this, warning the Philippians to not be easily deceived by those around them. He advices them to develop there own individual faiths and support each other together through it. He ends with encouraging words, saying that in the end Christ will lift you up before the Father.

Support, Death and Friends: Part two of a Study on Philippians

Chapter 2

2:1-4
-Paul challenges the people of Philipi
-saying that if they are truly followers of Christ that they should do that
-by following Christ it means to put others before you
            -to be selfless, not selfish
2:5-8
-Paul uses the example of Christ to enforce his point of being selfless
-"he set aside the privilege of Deity and took on the status of slave, of human!"
-even in death Christ was selfless, and obedient to God
-so we to in everything should be selfless and obedient to Him, living by Christ's example
2:9-11
-B/c of Christ's selfless and obedient nature He was honoured by all

Reflection on 2:1-11
Paul in this section has opened up the second chapter with telling those who live in Philipi to be selfless and obedient to Christ and the Father. His first chapter was all about support and encouragement, where as, after he has done so, so that the people of Philipi will not become proud of themselves and look down on others b/c of Pauls words, he still says you need to be like Christ, and be selfless and obedient.

2:12-13
-Paul then after advising goes back to encouragement
-"simply keep on doing what you've done from the beginning"
-Paul has seen the potential that the church in Philippi has, he has seen the bar they can reach and set for themselves
-he encourages them by saying you have achieved this bar now continue to push even further with your loving, obedient, supportive, selfless spirit
                -"Better yet, redouble your efforts."
2:14-16
-Paul goes back to selflessness
-he says again that they should continue to reach higher for the bar
-he encourages them to shine in this world, this "Squalid and polluted" world
2:17-18
-Paul doesn't care weather he dies or lives
-the only thing he cares about is that He has let Christ work through him to help the Philippians
2:19-24
-Timothy is being prepared to be sent to Philipi
-Paul says that so many are fake in the faith, but Timothy is true
-Timothy has a heart for missions, and God's will
-supporting Paul from day one, until the last day
2:25-27
-Paul mentions Epaphroditus, a Philippian that was sent to help Paul
-He know is sent back to Philipi to help there
-Help that was sent has helped and now is sent to help the helper
2:28-30
-In his sending back, Paul tells that Epaphroditus is one who deserves a well planned welcome back
-He supported Paul, even with his life

Reflection on 2:12-30:
Paul opens up with encouragement, then goes onto support and ends off with thanks. Throughout the whole book of Philippians one message is clear, to encourage and support fellow believers. He shows through his example and the example of two others what it means to have true faith in Christ, listening to His calling and no other, weather faced with death or not.
